Photographing the Pt. Reyes National Seashore

The Joy of Abstract Photography

We’ve all from time to time isolated a detail out of a landscape or the cityscape and been intrigued and inspired by the possibilities of this nonrepresentational way of expression. Abstract photography does not mean the same thing to everyone and creating an abstract image can often be easy: blurring a piece of a waterfall, the paint streaks on a weather-beaten door, or an extreme close-up of a flower. Yet, creating great abstract images takes imagination and practice. Although there are no official guidelines for making fine art abstractions, Jimmy will, in the course of this one-day seminar, open students’ eyes to the colors, patterns, rhythms, and textures that surround us in nature and to the challenge and rewards that derive from using our creative imagination to create stunning works of art.

Through a slide/digital presentation and lecture and mid-late afternoon field session, Jimmy will also inform students about composition, exposure, the quality of light, filters, and digital settings to help students refine their photographic skills and style. Both digital and film photographers are welcome. Students should also bring 5 prints to share of your abstract or impressionistic work.

Course Fee: $115 includes slide and lecture/discussion near Pt Reyes Nat'l Seashore and field work in the park. Fee does not include transportation or meals. Our meeting place at Point Reyes National Seashore is an hour and a half north of San Francisco, CA. Enrollment limited.
