The
Art of Light: Photographing the Pt. Reyes
National Seashore
Light is the essence of photography and without a sensitivity to its myriad forms, photographers cannot effectively express their inspirations. This information-packed, fun-filled day will give students an opportunity to absorb from slide shows and a planned field session, what it really means "to chase the light." Whether we journey around the world by slideshow with Jimmy or crawl on our bellies to photograph Point Reyes, students will gain a sense of the drama of "quintessential light"; its color quality and directional attributes. We will work to become aware of light’s dynamic qualities in the pursuit of finding inspiring subject matter, strengthening our compositions, and aiding us in the development of a personal style of seeing.
We will also learn how to open ourselves to the gifts that surround us, how to pre-visualize our objectives and how to spontaneously deal with "the play of light" as it unfolds. Other topics will include our choice of film and lenses, exposure, and the usage of warming and graduated neutral-density filters. In our afternoon field session, Jimmy will share insights into the magical low-angled autumnal light, help students find inspired subject matter in the dynamic Point Reyes landscape, and encourage experimentation with compositions, exposure and equipment. Students should also bring 5 prints of recent work to share with fellow students.
