Getting Intimate with the Landscape of California's Rugged Central Coast
The stretch of coast from From Pt Lobos to Garripata State Park is replete with idyllic trails, dramatic waterfalls,
spell-binding overlooks, riparian hardwood forests, mystical redwood groves, and spectacular beaches. This dynamic coastline
and its intricate canyons have long been a mecca for photographers.
From Weston to Adams to Bullock, the challenge for image makers has been constant: searching through the apparent discord of nature's chaos to discover the patterns and forms of this dynamic landscape— and to expressively harmonize those rhythms within the photographic medium.
Through guided field sessions,
the instructor will share insights into the techniques of
the creative process: "seeing deeply", composing with mindfulness,
and the correct application of the "nuts and bolts" of photography
to enhance your image-making abilities. Students will gain
a fresh vision of and sensitivity to the animated harmonies
that lie hidden within the turmoil of nature's intricacies,
sense the emotional message an image evokes, and learn to use the elements of design to compose more creatively.
Direct observation of the quality and directional attributes of light, the previsualization of
objectives, exposure techniques, the creative use of
equipment (lenses, filters, and flash), and how to break the rules will also be discussed.
Sharing our work and
getting feedback is an essential part of learning and of
opening our doors of perception. Students are encouraged to bring prints, slides, or digital images for projection to the workshop.
Participants should have a working knowledge of their cameras
and a basic understanding of photography, so most of our
energy can be concentrated on discovering, seeing, and the
creative process. Participants should bring the photographic equipment they
are most comfortable using. Photographers working in any
format, both film and digital, are welcome and should be prepared for gentle walks
of up to two miles round trip on both days.
Participants
are responsible for their own transportation, lodging, and
meals. More information
about lodging will be available upon registration. Early
enrollment is advisable.
